“The Giving Attitude, Part 2”

Pastor Daniel Wiley

Develop the right mindset...

  • #1 priority in giving is doing so from the right motivation
  • There is a difference between godly giving and worldly giving

2 Corinthians 8:2-13 CSB

1 We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that was given to the churches of Macedonia: 2 During a severe trial brought about by affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 I can testify that, according to their ability and even beyond their ability, of their own accord, 4 they begged us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in the ministry to the saints, 5 and not just as we had hoped. Instead, they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us by God's will. 6 So we urged Titus that just as he had begun, so he should also complete among you this act of grace.

7 Now as you excel in everything—in faith, speech, knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love for us[a]—excel also in this act of grace. 8 I am not saying this as a command. Rather, by means of the diligence of others, I am testing the genuineness of your love. 9 For you know the grace [GIVING NATURE] of our Lord Jesus Christ: Though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. 10 And in this matter I am giving advice because it is profitable for you, who began last year not only to do something but also to want to do it. 11 Now also finish the task, so that just as there was an eager desire, there may also be a completion, according to what you have. 12 For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 13 It is not that there should be relief for others and hardship for you, but it is a question of equality.

    • Godly giving is not done in response to pressure, it is done out of overwhelming generosity (or desire).
    • Being generous does not require any kind of wealth. (vs 2)
    • Godly giving is profitable to you (vs 10)
    • Godly giving involves financial planning and taking intentional action.

  • Godly giving takes intentional action and practice to develop within you.

Giving Alms

  • Alms is simply giving in response to a need. The greek work "eleos" means alms, charity, mercy, pity, a donation to the poor.

Matthew 6:1-4 CSB

"Be careful not to practice your righteousness[a] in front of others to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward with your Father in heaven. 2 So whenever you give to the poor, don't sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be applauded by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. 3 But when you give to the poor, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Proverbs 19:17 CSB

Kindness to the poor is a loan to the Lord, and he will give a reward to the lender.

  • The motivation for giving alms is need or having pity.
  • The reward for giving alms is a repayment of your gift.
  • Giving alms should be done without any fanfare or acclaim.
    • We should be intentional about preserving the dignity of others.
    • God is not opposed to us talking about our tithe, first fruits, or seed giving. He is opposed to us speaking or boasting about our alms giving.

Seed Offerings

  • The seed offering is anything given above the tithe or first fruits that is not alms.
  • The motivation for the seed offering is faith and investment (or growth potential)
    • We see potential in something and we want to see it grow.

2 Corinthians 9:1-11 CSB

1 Now concerning the ministry to the saints, it is unnecessary for me to write to you. 2 For I know your eagerness, and I boast about you to the Macedonians, "Achaia has been ready since last year," and your zeal has stirred up most of them. 3 But I am sending the brothers so that our boasting about you in this matter would not prove empty, and so that you would be ready just as I said. 4 Otherwise, if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we, not to mention you, would be put to shame in that situation.[a] 5 Therefore I considered it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance the generous gift you promised, so that it will be ready as a gift and not as an extortion.

6 The point is this:[b] The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work. 9 As it is written:

He distributed freely;
he gave to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever.[c]

10 Now the one who provides seed for the sower and bread for food will also provide and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us.

    • This entire passage is about a seed offering the Corinthian church was giving to the ministry of Paul.
    • The seed offering is not demanded by God. It is a choice for us completely of how much and where to give it.
      • Be careful of the soil you invest in to make sure you invest in good soil
    • When we sow seed, we should have kingdom minded thinking, not selfish, material minded thinking.
    • The promise of the seed offering is growth and a harvest.

Closing

2 Corinthians 9:7 CSB

Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver.
